Hi I am Sassy. Actually my given name is Christy. My mother
had parakeets and canaries when she was a little girl. We got our first
bird when we begged Mom and Dad to get us a purple parakeet we saw in a
pet store.
Regrettably one day our little parakeet flew into the kitchen window.
My brother ran to my bedroom and told me. I reached her just in time
for her to die in my hands. I was devastated.
We convinced Mom and Dad that we wanted to get another bird.
Dad had
heard about Cockatiels and suggested w
e get one. Mom found a breeder in the newspaper. I can remember driving
out to pick up our new brother. The aviary was in a screened in porch
at the back of the house. We picked out our cockatiel, a normal gray
male, and went home. We had quite a time trying to find a name for him
and then we settled on Hon (short for Honey). If you ask him though, he
thinks his name is BIRD. Cockatiels are very inquisitive creatures. Hon
was always into something so we were always yelling "BIRD!!!!" in an
exasperated voice. And every time it just made us love him even more. I
think he knew it too.
A year later my parents saw a baby Umbrella Cockatoo and thought we
would like one. I remember them picking me up after a school trip and
driving to the store. My sister, brother and I had no idea where we
were or what we were doing. We walked in this store that looked like a
storage facility and were quite surprised to see it was a pet store -
well not all pets, just fish and birds. We were upstairs admiring all
the other birds when this lady brought out this little baby bird that
had no feathers and very huge feet. She was so UGLY that she was
ADORABLE. Mom and Dad asked what we thought if we bought her and of
course we weren't going to argue. We couldn't take her home that night
though since she was still being hand fed. We named her Tori, which is
Bird in Japanese. So now we had two birds named Bird. Then the owner of
that store asked if we would take a Moluccan Cockatoo that was there
and responded really well to us, (we were in there every day to see
Tori). Pumpkin was wild caught and somehow fell into the hands of the
store owner. He was not very nice so the store owner had a hard time
selling him. When she got another Moluccan in she needed the cage that
Pumpkin was in. Mom agreed and went to pick him up. That was in August
and by Christmas that year Mom had managed to tame him so well that the
pet store owners didn't even believe he was the same bird. Hon and Tori
are still with my parents today. In fact Hon is the reason why my
mother is now a breeder. Pumpkin sadly died due to teflon poisoning.
I moved out when I was 18 and began my life on my own. I always felt
something was missing though.
In 1996 I met "Cat", the man that was destined to be my husband. I was
working two jobs at the time just because I was bored at home. I chose
to work at a local pet store since I love animals so much. That's when
I found what was missing. Keikki walked (or should I say flew) into my
life and brightened it up. Now Ken had never been around birds but I
just knew that he would fall in love just as I had some 12 years
before. So I brought her home and began teaching him everything I knew.
And just as I thought, he became enthralled with the world of Parrots.
We married in Sept. of 1998 and my wedding gift to him was Cubbie, our
Blue & Gold Macaw. Only three years later we had ten birds
total, 4 of which are breeding. It would be more if we were in a bigger
house. You know what they say.... "Birds are like potato chips, you
can't just have one." Boy ain't that the truth.
We purchased Makani in December 1999. Keikki immediatly took to him and
that is how we got into breeding. We really enjoy our birds so much and
hope that our babies will go to good homes and give you as much
pleasure as their parents give us. And yes even though they breed for
me they are still pets, and I still handle and cuddle with them as much
as possible.
