Species Information
Male vs. Female
Pictures of the babies from
hatching to weaning and information about
the various stages that the young chick goes through before they reach
full adulthood.
Native Habitats
Where do the Poicephalus come from? What types of food
do they eat? How
do they nest? What is the native weather conditions?
This is a synopsis of how we feed and care for our birds. This way you will know what your baby has been introduced to and thus will most likely be willing to eat once they go to their new home.
Some of my 'Firsts'
My First Baby
This is Derby, She is owned by Denise Bell. She hatched at Sassicat Aviary 3/12/05. Very few females keep any red on their bellies. But some do. I had a picture of a female form Gay Noeth in Canada who's female kept the red. One of my breeder females has quite a bit of red on her belly. And now as you see in these pictures, one of my babies has kept some of the red.

Breeding & Handraising
Hand Feeding
Feeding young chicks is not as easy as it seems. There
are many ways
that you can harm the chick. I explain the way that we feed and care
for our chicks so you know you are getting a well adjusted, well loved,
and socialized chick who will be ready for a happy life with you.
Fledging
Fledging can be a very difficult and dangerous time for
young chicks.
With patience and lots of nurturing guidance they learn how to fly
strong with only minor injuries.
Training
Young chicks are eager to be with their 'parent'. We use
this to teach
them some of the more simple commands such as step up, step down, and
come here.
Leg Bands
We use leg bands to identify our chicks. Leg bands also
prove that a
chick was hatched and raised in captivity. Here we tell you what the
letters and number represent.
The Business
of Breeding
I was asked by an online herald to write a column about
breeding. I started with info that would
be helpfull for anyone else that is considering getting into breeding.
There is more to this than simply putting two birds together and
raising the babies. There are other business, tax, and licensing
procedures to consider. Breeding is not a money making, or life
supporting venture unless you have
the time and capital to start out with several pairs at the start.
